Room-Size Cooling Calculator for New Zealand Homes

Work out how much cooling power your room needs, including whether the heat pump you've already got is enough — a BTU range and a recommendation, not a false-precision single number.

Room dimensions
Windows & sun
Room & occupants
Heat-generating equipment in the room

How this estimate works

We start from your room's floor area and ceiling height, then adjust for insulation quality, window size and orientation, how many people usually use the room, and any heat-generating equipment. Since most Kiwi homes' cooling capacity already comes from a heat pump bought for winter, the result also considers whether what you've already got is likely to be enough.

The recommended cooling type factors in whether you have outdoor unit access, since a smaller split system — or your existing heat pump — will usually outperform a larger portable unit, but only where that's actually an option for your room.
