How this estimate works
We start from your room's floor area and ceiling height, then adjust for insulation quality, window size and orientation, how many people usually use the room, and any heat-generating equipment. Climate matters as much as room size here — the same room needs a different answer in humid Brisbane than in dry Perth, so the result is shown as a range rather than one number.
The recommended cooling type also factors in whether you have outdoor unit access, since a smaller split system will usually outperform a larger portable unit — but only where installation is actually possible, which matters more for renters than the raw BTU figure does.
